Solano Co. 11th-Grade Gear-Up Seminar

Solano Community College

This program is for Solano County 11th-Grade teachers in the The American History Academy: Investigating the Past, Preparing for the Future, Teaching American History Grant awarded to Solano County Office of Education in partnership with The History Project and Solano Community College(SCC). Other teachers please contact Stacey (see below) for alternate registration if space is available.

11th-grade teachers from across the county will convene at SCC to consider the Guilded Age and Progressive Solutions with SCC historians. History Project leadership will train participants in historical thinking and academic literacy strategies for students. Teachers will walk away with new knowledge, resources, strategies, model lessons, books, and county colleagues to hit the ground running for the new school year. Participants will earn a $500 stipend & 20 professional growth hours.

We hope that teachers continue during the school year, when this cohort will continue work with SCC and the Project to collaboratively examine two additional units of study, Securing Freedom from the Depression to the WWII and Freedom on the March, learn new strategies, develop curriculum, and examine practice. Teachers will earn an additional stipend and more growth hours.

8th-Grade Teachers look for the Year 2 cohort school-year training program beginning in the fall. But you can register now. Dates TBD.

SCUSD High School Social Science Summer Institute

9am-4pm

McClatchy High School

Literacy in History and Historical Thinking Summer Institute for SCUSD High School Social Science Teachers, co-sponsored by the California Reading and Literature Project and the History Project at UCD.

The institute will focus on:
+Reexamining how to activate and develop background knowledge and vocabulary
+Integrating differentiation into what you already to
+Writing to Learn or Process Thinking strategies
+Utilizing the Process of Historical Investigation to design lessons and examine primary sources
+Building professional learning communities in your departments.

Each day will offer:
+Presentation of new strategies
+Teacher planning time and/or department collaboration time
+Lecture and Discussion facilitated by college professors
