| Notes about this image: | Pictorial journalism: "Attack on the Quarantine Establishment" in Harper's Weekly, 1858. "For years the existence of a quarantine hospital on Staten Island has been a grave injury to the city and to the island, breeding pestilence on the latter...and occasioning every year yellow fever panics which inflicted severe injury on the trade of the port. A commission, appointed by the governor, had done nothing about removing the source of trouble, and the Staten Islanders took matters into their own hands. On Sept. 1, at nine o'clock in the evening, a large party, 'disguised and armed,' attacked the hospital from two sides, removed the patients, and set the buildings on fire." |
