Notes about this image:Newgate, the first state prison in New York, from an old woodcut. "South East View, New-York State Prison," 1814. Begun in 1796, Newgate was modeled after the Walnut Street jail in Philadelphia. Given the few architectural departures from the colonial design, it is not surprising that the prison suffered internal disorganization and frequent convict escapes.

“During my 20+ years of teaching that I have attended workshops, without a doubt the UC Davis History Project workshops have been the best. High quality teacher presentations, first-rate professors, and excellent hands-on primary source material to use in your classroom. A++”
