Such events were patterned after the knightly jousting tournaments of the Middle Ages. | Recreation: The ring tournament. "One of the ultimates in Southern Romanticism was the custom of the ring tournament, which continued until after the Civil War." In the 1840s and '50s most Southern states held these "knightly" contests.
