The plan of the Pueblo of San Fernando de Bexar (San Antonio), Texas, c. 1777. This was one of the early Spanish towns in what is now the U.S. This town plan is an example of a town set up according to the Laws of the Indies, royal ordinances proclaimed by the King of Spain that set forth specifications and guiding principles for the construction of towns. Some specifications dealt with the main plaza, around which was to be situated the government buildings, merchant shops, and often, as illustrated here, the main church.

View of San Francisco, California, 1846, just before the Gold Rush. The small gridiron street pattern visible even now would soon spread as the city grew rapidly. The vertical streets are Clay and Washington; the horizontal streets are Kearney and Montgomery.

“The History Project provides a wonderful opportunity for university historians to learn from K-12 teachers and to engage the problems of history education in a new light.”
