Learning and teaching history means expressing ideas clearly to me since I learned to eschew the passive voice. If I could go back in time, I would land in the 1920s, enjoying some hootch because I'd just voted for the first time. My favorite moment at the HP would have to be when we learn that we've won another grant since that means I still have a job and we can serve more teachers and affect more students. I believe Fanny Wright is my favorite historical figure since she was a rebel and free thinker who pursued equality for all. The icon I chose is important to me since peace is hot. If I had a wish about history education, it would have to be that more students would have the kind of rich and rigorous instruction that made me love history. We all learn from looking back, but if I could travel to the future I would bring back a solution to global warming and some delicious space-age chocolate. Really.

Learning and teaching history means the difference between putting food on the table and not to me since I can't really do anything else very well. If I could go back in time, I would land in Ford's Theater, enjoying my ability to thwart John Wilkes Booth because I heart Abe Lincoln. My favorite moment at the HP would have to be I'm done speaking since I grow weary of the sound of my own voice. I believe Lincoln, as noted above, is my favorite historical figure since he was uncommonly tall. The icon I chose is important to me since I REFUSE TO CHOOSE AN ICON, just try and make me. If I had a wish about history education, it would have to be that teachers would be paid like professional athletes. We all learn from looking back, but if I could travel to the future I would bring back toast. because I'm really hungry right now. And toast sounds delicious. Really.

Learning and teaching history means creating the "aha" moment for students to me since I will know that I have made a difference in their education…for a few months!. If I could go back in time, I would land the Kennedy White House in 1961, enjoying Jackie Kennedy's fashion and style because it was the time of new hope and the beginning of a new enthusiasm in America. My favorite moment at the HP would have to be setting up my penthouse suite office since my husband, son, and close friend all pitched in with blood, sweat, and tears…and some laughs. I believe Princess Diana is my favorite historical figure since she connected with everyday people and raised AIDS awareness. The icon I chose is important to me since Midway Plantation was witness to the Civil War. If I had a wish about history education, it would have to be that all projects involved gllitter. We all learn from looking back, but if I could travel to the future I would bring back a Rose Bowl win for Cal. Really.

Learning and teaching history means a life's work to me since I can't imagine doing anything else for a living. If I could go back in time, I would land Renaissance Italy, enjoying the art because I have a love and passion for art. My favorite moment at the HP would have to be be when I slipped up during one of my presentations since it makes for a very funny story. I believe Harriet Tubman is my favorite historical figure since she extremely brave and was willing to sacrifice her life for the lives of others. The icon I chose is important to me since I have a great love for all things "piratey"! If I had a wish about history education, it would have to be that I could help more students gain a love and appreciation for history. We all learn from looking back, but if I could travel to the future I would bring back a Sports Almanac so that I could bet on future sporting events and make millions...which of course I would immediately donate to charity. Really.

Learning and teaching history means a challenge to me since I want to share my passion with others who are less inspired. If I could go back in time, I would land Prague in the spring of 1968, enjoying the spirit of the people because of the new (albeit temporary) democratic reforms. My favorite moment at the HP would have to be moving to my new (albeit temporary) office since I now have a room with a view. I believe Gandhi is my favorite historical figure since he continues to inspire peaceful resistance for freedom and human rights. The icon I chose is important to me since I love to travel both through history and in the present. If I had a wish about history education, it would have to be that more policy makers recognize history's importance for training citizens who can critically read, analyze, and write. We all learn from looking back, but if I could travel to the future I would bring back solution to the Middle East conflict because I know there will have to be one, right? Really.

Learning and teaching history means adventure to me since I've learned not to fear primary sources. If I could go back in time, I would land in 1783, enjoying the aftermath of the Revolutionary War because of the unprecedented possibility to create a new kind of nation. My favorite moment at the HP would have to be the day I spotted Bob Bain at a conference since he is the rock star of historical thinking. I believe Ben Franklin is my favorite historical figure since he he knew how to "take time for all things" including levity. The icon I chose is important to me since I appreciate brevity. If I had a wish about history education, it would have to be every student "do history" with their teacher-historian. We all learn from looking back, but if I could travel to the future I would bring back a history of my own time so we could have the benefit of hindsight to see our mistakes in time to avoid them. Really.

Learning and teaching history means excitement to me since I love history and loved teenagers. If I could go back in time, I would land on Ellis Island, enjoying working with immigrants because they needed reassurance, help, and translators. My favorite moment at the HP would have to be working on the Marchand website at night since then I feel Roland's presence and guidance. I believe Dorothy Day is my favorite historical figure since she devoted her life to the poor and was extremely strong. The icon I chose is important to me since I'm all for direct action…and cats. If I had a wish about history education, it would have to be that only professional history teachers taught it and the American people LEARNED it and CARED. We all learn from looking back, but if I could travel to the future I would bring back funding for public schools. Really.

Learning and teaching history means appreciating as an adult what I missed as a student to me since I'm now trying to stay one day ahead of my 5th-grade son! If I could go back in time, I would land the Age of Exploration, enjoying "India" because I'd be lost like Columbus. My favorite moment at the HP would have to be when our Pulitzer Prize winning historian called me by name since now I know I'm somebody. I believe Al Capone is my favorite historical figure since he was the gangsta I wanted to be (before I had three kids). The icon I chose is important to me since since I depend on the offspring the Commodore PET to make order out of chaos. If I had a wish about history education, it would have to be that more teachers were as interesting as those I meet through this Project. We all learn from looking back, but if I could travel to the future I would bring back a snow globe - it maybe the only snow in the future. Really.

“UC Davis History Project staff work tirelessly to provide relevant, up to date content that serves both (or multiple) perspectives in our content area. The program has become a valuable resource for me in the form of images, background history and historical links to current world events.”
