This program is nearly full. Register ASAP to save your slot. Directions below.

We invite teachers from the K-12 classroom to join us this fall for Return to Gold Mountain: Historic Tour and Teacher Workshop a professional learning opportunity that takes teachers into the High Sierras to see iconic sites of the Chinese Railroad Workers who built the first Transcontinental Railroad. 2019 marks the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, an opportune moment for this tour.

The History Project will lead additional professional learning sessions to support teachers in implementing learning from the tour, included in the cost of the tour.

  • Background readings
  • October 1, 4:30-6:30 PST: pre-trip webinar featuring scholar talk by UC Davis Historian, Cecilia Tsu on the history of the Chinese Railroad Workers
  • Teacher leader led workshops during the tour with strategies to examine primary and secondary sources
  • November 14, 4:30-6:30 PST: post-trip webinar to complete the educational program and share learning
  • Certificate for 20 professional learning hours or optionally purchase 2-quarter Continuing Education Units for $120

*Note: The tour and educational workshops will be familiar to teachers who have participated in our NEH Transcontinental Railroad Landmarks Workshop. However, new stops along the way, the overnight stay in Reno, and the train ride home will be additions beyond the trip we take during the Landmarks Workshop.
